Gomoku

Gomoku is among the simplest possible games. The goal is simply to make 5 stones in a row, playing one stone at a time, except for a small opening riff to blance the game. Read the complete rules here.

Boardspace also hosts a variation called Gomoku+Capture2 which knowlegable players will recognise as Pente. Pente isn't a public domain name even though its commercial life seems to be over.

Robots: Not to shabby at the tactics, but probably weak on strategy.

The back story: Gomoku is a classic, which I came to appreciate when it was included in the Mochalunt tournament.
